Trailers generally start of with a story line witch introduces the characters. So far i have managed to produce this to the best of my ability. I have used an establishing pan shot of my prison to set the scene. The pathetic fallacy works well as you can see the court yard surrounded by big trees and a gloomy grey sky. This creates entrapment and a sense of fear, however its ironic as you can clearly tell its mid-afternoon and not night time or late-evening-those being the most dangerous times of a day. I learnt from AS that filming at night does not allow for clear shots and visual screen viewing, the lighting is low and therefore viewers are not able to see much on the screen, this is off putting, meaning they are hardly going to watch a film that is unclear and far from coherent. On the other hand, footage in mid-day, followed by effects of Premier Pro works much more effectively, and ultimately saves time because i don't then have to re-film elements of my construction.
The second half of my trailer needs to be more active and include various actions, this should be backed up with fast paced non diagetic sound . I started of by understanding that the two characters need a connection towards each other, so i am able to successfully create a narrative hook and capture the viewers attention, through the interest of this connection- but more importantly, so they understand the story line.
From here, i created drafts of ideas and planned out the types of connections that could be possible:
My first is to have close up's of my detectives facial expression and body language as him and his forensic team investigate the escape in more detail, from here i imaged a good connection is to display various long shots like pans and tracks to establish the prisoners change of identity and escape. I thought it would be interesting to maybe change her look once she is out of prison and maybe even form a new personality, one that is much more violent then we initially see, this physical transformation intrigues the audience, leaving them wanting to know what else this individual is capable of . In terns of prop,s i was effectively aiming to buy a wig of full black hair so that it is the complete opposite from her blonde her (making it a strong element in her transformation) different but yet still clear for the viewers to know its the prisoner and are able to identify her (my last intentions are to confuse my audience). In addition to that, a hat or sunglasses to protect her when she is in public so she doesn't get recognised-as she is a most wanted suspect- and is protects her self, enabling her to stay on the run and away from getting caught.
This becomes a 'goose chase', the detective trying to find her and getting dangerously close each time, to the prisoner running away and escaping as soon as she can after each criminal activity, purposely leaving clues behind just for the thrill of it, this shows her bravery and although the audience can tell the protagonist is evil, they side with her because of her ability to 'be on top of the law'. For my detectives search team i was thinking it would be good to use typical objects that real scientists or detectives use to spot clues and look for evidence, for example a microscopes or a computer systems with criminal database and information on it, so he can track down her motives and past convictions, helping him to further find her. The mis-en-scene and attention to detail in the second half of my trailer is crucial and needs to be carefully planned out. This will be clear for the viewers to see there motive, and how they are going about capturing her. Also it builds suspense because of the enigma.
My second idea that could occur in terms of there connection is, once the 'goose chase' is over, they could meet face to face, eye to eye, here i can use interesting shots and purposely break the 180 degree rule to circle the two characters together, creating tension and thrill. The audience would want to watch this as the climax of my trailer not only creates a cliff hanger of what will happen next, but is also filmed in an interesting way so my audience are able to see the technique portrayed through the screen and the quality that goes with it.
Other minor connection's can be that the prisoner has hurt or killed a member of the detectives family, this being the reason for his passion and obsession to capture her and bring justice upon her again. I could show this through a burial scene using high angle shots, this indicates that they are inferior and at a loss on a literal basis-because of there dead family member- and because the person that committed this brutal act is on the loose.I could then cut to the prisoner and show low angle shots to contrast with the previous shot, indicating that she holds the power at this point and through the majority of the film. Further then that, maybe i could just state the loss of his family through a narrative voice over, explaining there tragic death and why it is compulsory to find her again- this being that she is a threat to society and personally to the detective.
My last connection could be through a phone call. i could zoom in only on the protagonists lips so we know who she is but she is quiet and deceiving and we could reveal all the detectives face indicating that he is honest and not secretive. This is creative and simply impresses viewers to watch on and not loose interest.
Nothing is for certain yet, but let me know your opinions so i can count up the majority of interests. Thank you :)
